I think in the few instances that a measurement is by volume, I've seen that they take care to point that out.

I've been using the scales I have access to at work while I try this new "activity" out. But I think I'll end up springing for a scale to have at home. I've weighed out the contents of a few jars and bottles, and they DON'T always contain the amount the label says. (Example: I had a 4 ounce bottle of Avocado oil. I poured out the oil and weighed it and it was only 3-1/2 ounces. So I really don't think I'm going to be trusting bottle labels for accurate weight as a rule!)

And I tried a few of Steve's blender recipes in a plastic blender with no problem. I cleaned it out right away and didn't let the soap solution stay on it for any length of time. But the lye comes in plastic bottles, so obviously SOME kinds of plastic can take it (at least for short periods).
