I've done a few blender recipes this past week and used the usual measure by weights. The recipe would probably say if you were supposed to measure by volume.
I have a blender w/ a glass container but I use plastic bowls too so I don't see why it wouldn't be ok. The only drawback to plastic I've noticed is that it tends to absorb scent from the FO's.
